Cross & Crows Books is a bookstore located in East Vancouver (also called East Van or the East Side), a region within the city of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The owner wanted the logo/iconography for the business to include two main aspects of the area: it’s apparently rampant crow population, and the iconic East Van sign, which is a point of pride for residents and businesses alike. To those ends, I created two designs to represent the business.

 

This is an interpretation of the East Van Cross icon, with the name of the business replacing the original words. The basic version features the words intersecting at their common vowel. 

The other version is a one color design paying homage to a famous photograph of the East Van Cross sign in perspective. It’s used occasionally by the business for events/merchandising. 

The main logo for the business is a more traditional take focusing more on the Crow side of the East Van persona. It is the main trademark for the business, used on the website and in all other official capacities. I made two variations of the mark: the normal dark one, and its inverted sibling, created to make sure the logo correctly retains its main characteristics even when reproduced on dark surfaces.

The Main Logo is featured in a Gift Certificate that was created and successfully used to stimulate profits during the end-of-year Halloween/Thanksgiving/Christmas Holiday trifecta. The design is easy on the eyes of both staff and customers, easy to produce en masse with the store’s desktop printer, with plenty of room to show off the purchasers fancy holiday writing skills.
